Platform Observability & Agent Insights

Impact

Platform teams can compare a broad fleet without an agent narrating every score, then investigate a named case and create follow-up work intentionally.

  • Comparable fleet scores
  • Selected-case investigation
  • User-owned Jira

01 · Problem & operating context

A fleet review needed an answer, not more tabs.

A broad engineering repository surface was too much for manual health checks. A platform owner could see a score, then still have to move between monitoring, repository settings, and CI history to understand which team or condition deserved attention.

The useful routine was not an agent opinion about every repository. It was a stable way to compare the fleet, then a clear handoff into a specific case when an engineer had a real question.

02 · My role & ownership

I turned existing telemetry into an operating workflow.

I designed and implemented repository-health scoring, the collection path, backend APIs, dashboard, and filters around existing telemetry. The work made those signals queryable and comparable while keeping the underlying telemetry as shared platform input.

I also connected a selected case to deeper investigation and follow-up questions. Jira creation remains a deliberate user click, so a low score does not quietly become a work item.

Built
Repository-health scoring, data collection, backend APIs, dashboard, and filters.
Designed
Deterministic routine scores with a selected-case investigation path.
Integrated
Existing telemetry and shared monitoring inputs.
Owned

Designed and built repository-health scoring, backend APIs, dashboard, and filters.

Designed

Kept routine scores deterministic and deeper agent work focused on a selected case or question.

Contributed

Connected existing telemetry and monitoring inputs to the operating surface.

Team context

Engineering repositories and shared telemetry describe the platform surface.

03 · System architecture

Collected signals become a question an engineer can act on.

Existing telemetry enters the backend, which applies the repository-health scoring logic I designed and serves the score through the API. The dashboard and filters turn that score into a way to compare engineering repositories, inspect one, and narrow the condition that needs attention.

If the engineer opens a particular case or asks a question, the selected repository context moves into the deeper investigation path. Follow-up work is then an explicit action after that inspection, not a side effect of routine collection.

Input
Existing telemetry and shared monitoring inputs across engineering repositories.
Routine path
Deterministic backend score shown through APIs, dashboard, and filters.
Selected path
Case/question investigation with explicit user-controlled Jira creation.
DETERMINISTIC FLEET VIEW

04 · Decisions & trade-offs

Predictability mattered more than automatic commentary.

Keeping routine scoring deterministic gives the fleet a stable baseline. I reserved the agent for a named case or question, rather than spend compute and attention generating a new explanation for every ordinary score.

That choice puts the first investigative choice with the engineer. Filters preserve the comparison context, while the deeper path can focus on the repository and condition that actually prompted the question.

Chosen approach

Keep ordinary scores deterministic and open a deeper agent path only for a selected case or question.

Rejected alternative

Run an agent over every score and automatically create follow-up work.

Why

The fleet view stays comparable while investigation remains tied to a specific engineering question.

Cost introduced

An engineer must make an explicit choice to open the deeper path or create a Jira issue.

ROUTINE SCORES STAY DETERMINISTIC

05 · Failure modes & recovery

Missing context is a reason to investigate, not a new score.

When a selected case has missing or conflicting inputs, the dashboard keeps the case and its available context visible. The score stays traceable to the same collection path instead of being silently replaced with a speculative explanation.

The engineer can refine the filters, ask a focused question, or capture follow-up work after reviewing the case. That keeps an observable gap separate from the decision to act on it.

Failure signal
A selected case lacks the context needed to answer an engineer question.
Attribution
The routine score and selected-case path remain separate, so missing context is not disguised as a score change.
Response
Keep the missing context visible and let the engineer refine the case or question.
Authority
The engineer decides whether to investigate further or create a Jira issue.
Recovery check
The dashboard preserves the score, filters, selected context, and explicit user action.
KEEP THE CASE BOUNDARY VISIBLE
